The Sikh Course

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the purpose of The Sikh Course?
The Sikh Course has only one aim: to present the fundamental principles of the Sikh faith in a short course.

Why has the course been started?
There is a huge lack of knowledge amongst both the Sikh and non-Sikh communities about what the Sikh faith is actually all about. This course aims to spread the knowledge of the Sikh faith as much as possible.

Why is it free?
It is not our aim to make any profits from this course. If anyone wishes to donate their services or funds, we would put such support to use by expanding The Sikh Course further.

What's the catch?
There is no catch whatsoever. We don't expect anything in return for the course.

Who is the course open to?
The course is open to absolutely everyone, no matter what background, religion, gender, qualifications, etc. However, the course is aimed at adults, so it may not be easily absorbed by children.

Will I be preached to?
Absolutely not. You will only be presented with facts about the Sikh faith.

Am I free to disagree with the course tutor?
Of course. We very much value debate and discussion. However, due to the short time in which the course is presented, lengthy debates will have to wait until after the scheduled session has ended.

Will I be the odd one out?
We're all a little odd! People from all backgrounds will be attending.

Am I expected to speak in front of others during the course?
You won't be put on the spot or asked questions.

What level of knowledge is assumed of participants?
No knowledge of anything in particular is assumed.

How long does the course last?
The course starts at 9:30am and finishes at 6pm.

How is the course presented?
The course is presented in the style of a university lecture. There are no exercises or demonstrations.

Am I free to leave part-way through the course?
Absolutely. You are free to leave whenever you wish.

Do I gain any qualifications having completed the course?
We do not offer any formal qualifications, although we would like to think you'd be walking away from the course with a great deal more knowledge of the Sikh faith and it's principles.

Are there any exams at the end of the course?
No.

Do I need to bring anything to the course?
You may wish to bring some paper and a pen for note-taking, but you're not required to bring anything in particular.

Will the course be available anywhere other than in Bradford?
Hopefully, over time, the course may well expand into other cities. If you can help us expand, please do contact us.

Who runs this course?
The course is run by a small group of Sikhs who are passionate about the Sikh faith and it's principles.

How can I help to support you?
If you would like to help us, please contact us with what you are able to offer; any kind of help is very much appreciated.
